Charlie Russell: The Cowboy Artist of Montana
Charles Marion Russell was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1864, but his heart belonged to the wild open spaces of the American West. As a boy, Charlie spent hours drawing pictures of horses, cowboys, and Native Americans. He dreamed of leaving the big city behind to experience life on the Western frontier. When he was sixteen years old, his parents allowed him to travel to Montana. Montana quickly became his lifelong home and the ultimate inspiration for his famous artwork.
When Charlie arrived in Montana, he took on jobs as a sheep tender and a night wrangler, taking care of cattle herds under the starry skies. Living and working on the open range gave Charlie firsthand experience with the daily challenges of cowboy life. During one winter, he lived near the Blackfeet Nation. He learned their traditions, respected their culture, and developed a deep appreciation for the native peoples of the plains. Charlie carried a small watercolor paint set in his pocket wherever he went, capturing scenes of everyday life in his sketchbook whenever he had a free moment.
