John Chapman: Beyond Johnny Appleseed

Many Americans know the story of Johnny Appleseed, a cheerful wanderer who scattered apple seeds wherever he went. Behind that familiar figure was a real person: John Chapman. He did travel widely and plant apple seeds, but his work was more careful and organized than the legend often suggests.
John Chapman was born on September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts. As a young man, he traveled west into areas that later became part of Ohio and Indiana. At the time, more and more settlers were moving into the region. Indigenous peoples already lived on and cared for these lands, and westward settlement brought conflict and the loss of Indigenous land.
Chapman’s work involved growing apple trees. Rather than simply tossing seeds along the road, he started nurseries: plots of land where young trees could grow until they were ready to be moved. He planted seeds, tended the seedlings, and sometimes built fences to protect them from animals. He returned to nurseries on his travels and arranged for others to care for them when he was away.
