Christiaan Huygens: Master of Time

Christiaan Huygens: Master of Time
Have you ever wondered how we know the exact time? Long ago, people used sundials or water clocks, which weren't very accurate. But in 1656, a brilliant Dutch scientist named Christiaan Huygens changed everything!
Early Life and Brilliance
Christiaan Huygens was born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1629. Even as a young boy, he showed a great interest in science and math. His father, Constantijn Huygens, was a well-respected diplomat and encouraged Christiaan's studies. Christiaan studied law and mathematics, but his real passion was discovering how the world worked.
The Pendulum Clock
The most famous invention of Huygens is the pendulum clock. Clocks before Huygens were not very precise; they could lose or gain minutes every day. Huygens realized that a pendulum, swinging back and forth at a steady rate, could keep much better time. He designed a clock using a pendulum and a special mechanism to count each swing. This invention made clocks incredibly accurate, losing less than a minute per week!
