Connecting History: Research Request for the Millfield Community Archive

To: m.alvarez@millfieldhistorical.org From: maya.lin@millfieldms.k12.state.us Date: October 14, 2024 Subject: Grade 6 Social Studies Research Visit Inquiry - Millfield Middle School
Dear Ms. Alvarez,
My name is Maya Lin, and I am a sixth grader at Millfield Middle School. I am writing to you on behalf of my social studies team, which includes four other students: Julian, Samira, Leo, and Marcus. Our teacher, Mr. Henderson, suggested I contact you directly because you coordinate the Millfield Community Archive.
This quarter, our class is participating in a project called "Uncovering Local Roots." Each group chose one aspect of our town's history to research using primary sources rather than just modern websites or textbooks. While many groups chose famous landmarks like the clock tower or the old iron bridge, our team chose the development of our public park system between 1910 and 1955. We learned from a classroom timeline that Millfield originally had no public recreation areas until community neighborhood clubs petitioned the town council to convert unused railroad lots into community gardens and athletic fields. We want to discover who organized those early petitions, what challenges they faced, and how those decisions changed daily life for neighborhood families.
