Coralia and the Ocean's To-Do List

Coralia was a mermaid who lived in a vibrant part of the Great Barrier Reef. Her tail shimmered with every color of the rainbow, and her hair was the color of sea foam. Coralia loved her home, and she believed it was her job to make sure it was always perfect. From dawn until dusk, Coralia worked tirelessly. She polished the pearl oysters until they gleamed, shooed away tiny, nibbling barnacles from the coral, and even organized fallen seashells into neat, swirling patterns.

"Good morning, Coralia!" called Finley, a friendly dolphin, as he swam by. "Why don't you take a break and play tag through the kelp forest with me? The sun is shining beautifully today!"

Coralia sighed, dusting a speck of algae from a sea anemone. "Oh, Finley, I can't. Look at this anemone! It's almost perfect. Besides, the pufferfish haven't arranged their sand castles in a straight line, and the hermit crabs are tracking sand all over the polished rocks! I have so much to do!"

Finley swam off, looking a little sad. Coralia barely noticed. She spent her days scrubbing, polishing, and tidying. Her coral garden was the neatest in the entire ocean, and the seashells in her cove were alphabetized by species. Yet, Coralia often felt a strange tiredness, a dull ache in her shimmering tail. She rarely laughed, and her beautiful seafoam hair seemed a little less bouncy.

One afternoon, as Coralia was carefully lining up pebbles, an ancient sea turtle named Shelly swam slowly towards her. Shelly had seen many seasons and understood the ocean's gentle rhythms. "Coralia, my dear," Shelly said softly, her voice like the rustling of sea grass. "You work so hard, but do you ever truly see the beauty you're preserving? Do you feel the joy of the ocean, or only the weight of its chores?"

Coralia paused. She looked at the sparkling water, the playful schools of fish darting by, and the gentle sway of the kelp. For the first time in a long time, she really saw it. She had been so busy working for the ocean, she had forgotten how to live in it. She saw Finley playing tag in the distance, his happy squeals echoing.

Slowly, Coralia put down her polishing cloth. She took a deep breath, and for the first time that day, she smiled a genuine, wide smile. She swam over to a group of clownfish playing hide-and-seek and joined their game. Later, she raced Finley through the kelp forest, her laughter bubbling like ocean currents. That evening, as the moon cast a silvery glow on the reef, Coralia felt a peace she hadn't known in ages. The reef wasn't perfectly tidy, but it was perfectly alive, and so was she. She learned that day that sometimes, the most important thing to do is simply to be, and to enjoy the world around you.
