Imagine standing on a bridge as the sun begins to set. Suddenly, the sky turns a fiery, blood-red color, and you feel a strange sense of worry or excitement deep in your chest. For most people, this would just be a memory. But for the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, it became the inspiration for one of the most famous paintings in the world: The Scream. Edvard Munch was a pioneer of a style called Expressionism. Instead of painting things exactly as they looked in real life, he wanted to paint how they felt on the inside.
Edvard was born in 1863 in a small village in Norway. His childhood was not easy. When he was very young, his mother and his favorite sister passed away from illness. These sad events had a huge impact on how Edvard saw the world. He often felt lonely or anxious, and as he grew older, he realized that he could use art to express these heavy emotions. While other artists at the time were busy painting pretty landscapes or realistic portraits, Edvard began to paint the 'soul' of his subjects.
