  • Minerals and Ores: It is essential to distinguish between these two terms. Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic substances found in the Earth’s crust. Ores are specific minerals that contain a high percentage of a particular metal, allowing for its profitable and convenient extraction.

The Occurrence of Non-metals

Non-metals are distributed differently than metals, appearing in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and the lithosphere. Their occurrence is also characterized by their chemical stability:

  • Atmospheric Presence: Many non-metals exist in a gaseous state in the atmosphere. Nitrogen and oxygen are the most prominent, making up the bulk of the air we breathe. Noble gases like helium, neon, and argon also exist in the atmosphere in their free, monatomic state due to their complete lack of reactivity.
  • Crustal Compounds: In the Earth's crust, non-metals are frequently found in combined forms. For example, silicon is the second most abundant element in the crust, occurring primarily as silica (sand) or in silicate minerals. Phosphorus is found in phosphate rocks, while sulfur occurs in both its free state near volcanoes and in combined states as sulfates and sulfides.
  • Biological Importance: Many non-metals are found within living organisms. Carbon, for instance, occurs in the free state as diamond or graphite, but it is also a fundamental component of all organic molecules, carbon dioxide, and carbonate rocks.
