The Golden Rule: Act in the First Minute
When a vehicle enters the water, it does not sink like a stone instantly. Most vehicles float for anywhere between thirty seconds and two minutes before the cabin becomes submerged. This brief window—often called the "golden minute"—provides your best and safest opportunity for escape.
Many motorists mistakenly believe they should wait until the vehicle fills with water so that the internal and external water pressure can equalize, allowing the doors to open easily. Safety researchers and survival experts strongly warn against this passive approach. Waiting causes severe complications: water quickly drowns vehicle occupants, obscures visibility, and induces overwhelming panic. Step 1: Undo Seatbelts
