The Critical Window: The Golden Minute
When an automobile lands in water, it rarely sinks instantaneously. Most passenger vehicles retain enough buoyancy to float for approximately thirty seconds to two minutes before water completely floods the cabin. This brief interval—frequently termed the "golden minute"—represents your highest probability of escape.
Many motorists mistakenly believe they should remain seated until the cabin fills completely, assuming they must allow internal and external water pressure to equalize before pushing the door open. Emergency specialists vigorously refute this misconception. Waiting inside a flooding car invites severe hazards: occupants risk drowning in rushing water, zero visibility can trigger extreme panic, and rising water levels short-circuit electrical components. Survival protocols demand swift, proactive measures before the vehicle descends below the surface.
Step 1: Release Restraints Immediately
The moment your car strikes the water, do not hesitate or waste valuable time trying to place an emergency phone call. Your immediate physical egress is the only priority. Unbuckle your seatbelt without delay. If young children are present, release your own restraint first so that you achieve full mobility to assist them.
