At Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, Rhode Island, pools of seawater can stay among the rocks when the tide goes out. Follow these steps to explore one safely.

  1. Plan your trip. Go with an adult. Ask the adult to check the tide and weather before you leave. A low tide is a good time to look for pools.

  2. Get ready. Wear shoes that grip well. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. You can also bring a small notebook and a pencil.

  3. Walk with care. Stay close to your adult. Wet rocks can be slick, and waves can splash over them. Walk slowly and stay away from the edge of the water.

  4. Find a pool. Look for water sitting between the rocks. Stop where you have a safe place to stand. Never climb down to a pool by yourself.

  5. Look closely. You may see small snails on the rocks or seaweed in the water. Watch for a tiny crab hiding in a crack. Be still and see what moves.

  6. Leave things as they are. Look at the animals without picking them up. Leave rocks and seaweed in place. They can be homes or hiding spots for small animals.
