The Great Farmyard Recess Debate

Characters:

  • Narrator
  • Percy, a pig
  • Rosie, a rooster
  • Daisy, a cow

Narrator: The sun was shining on Farmer McGregor's farm, but inside the barn, a serious debate was brewing.

Percy: (Yawning) Oh, I'm so tired. All this rooting around in the mud makes a pig sleepy. I think kids should have longer recess at school. That way, I could nap in peace.

Rosie: (Flapping her wings) Longer recess? Absolutely not! Children need to learn the value of hard work! If recess were shorter, they'd wake up earlier and help with chores. Imagine all the extra eggs we could collect!

Daisy: (Chewing her cud) Re... cess? What in the world is a re-cess? Is it something you eat? Does it taste like grass?

Narrator: Percy rolled his eyes.

Percy: Daisy, recess is when the little humans get to run around and play at school. If it were longer, they'd be too tired to bother me while I'm trying to sleep.

Rosie: (Strutting back and forth) Nonsense! They should be learning responsibility, not lazing about! Shorter recess, more chores, that's what I say!

Daisy: (Tilting her head) So, they run around and... play? Like when I chase butterflies in the meadow? That does sound fun. Maybe a little recess wouldn't be so bad.

Percy: (Sighing) You see, Rosie? Even Daisy understands. A longer recess means happier kids, and a quieter farm for sleepy pigs.

Rosie: (Squawking) But what about the eggs? Who will gather the eggs if they're all playing?

Narrator: Just then, Farmer McGregor walked into the barn.

Farmer McGregor: What's all the commotion? I could hear you all the way from the house.

Percy: We're debating whether children should have longer recess, Farmer McGregor.

Farmer McGregor: (Chuckling) Well, I think a little play is good for everyone. But we also need to get our work done. How about a compromise? A slightly longer recess, and everyone helps with chores afterward?

Rosie: (Considering) Hmmm, a compromise... I suppose that could work.

Percy: (Smiling) As long as I still get my nap.

Daisy: (Happily) And maybe they'll invite me to play with them during recess! Do you think they'd like to chase butterflies?

Narrator: And so, the animals of Farmer McGregor's farm learned that sometimes, the best solutions come from finding a little compromise.
