Narrator: Welcome to the tropical rainforest. It is a place filled with tall trees, heavy rain, and many amazing animals. Today, six friends are meeting in a clearing to talk about where they live.

Tico the Toucan: (Flapping wings) Hello down there! I am Tico the Toucan. I spend most of my time in the emergent layer. That is the very top of the forest where the tallest trees poke out into the sunlight. It is bright and windy up here, but I have the best view of the whole world!

Max the Monkey: (Swinging from a vine) Slow down, Tico! You are making me dizzy. I am Max the Spider Monkey, and I prefer the canopy. This layer is like a big green roof over the forest. There are so many delicious fruits, nuts, and flowers to eat here. Plus, I can swing from branch to branch with my long tail.

Sam the Sloth: (In a slow, sleepy voice) Did someone... say... fruit? I am Sam the Sloth. I also live in the canopy, but I do not swing like Max. I move very, very slowly so that predators like eagles do not notice me. It takes me a long time to get anywhere, but I think the canopy is the most peaceful place to be.

Fern the Frog: (Hopping onto a large, wet leaf) Don't forget about the middle! I am Fern the Red-Eyed Tree Frog. I live in the understory. This layer is below the canopy. It is much darker here because the big leaves above block most of the sun. It is perfect for me because it stays nice and damp, which keeps my skin healthy.

Jace the Jaguar: (Walking quietly on padded paws) I hear you all talking about the heights. I am Jace the Jaguar, and I live on the forest floor. It is the darkest and quietest part of the rainforest. I walk silently on the fallen leaves and swim in the cool rivers. I am the king of the ground!

Narrator: The animals looked at each other. Each one thought their own layer of the rainforest was the best. They decided to have a friendly debate to see who was right.

Tico the Toucan: The emergent layer is the best because I am the first to see the sun every morning. I can fly high above the clouds and see for miles!

Max the Monkey: But Tico, it is lonely up there! In the canopy, most of the rainforest animals live together. We have the most food and the most space to play.

Fern the Frog: The understory is better for small animals like me. There are plenty of giant leaves to hide under when it rains. And it rains almost every day! Without the shade from the canopy, I would get much too hot.

Jace the Jaguar: You all have good points, but the forest floor is where the big action happens. This is where the giant trees start their lives as tiny seeds in the soil. Without the floor, none of your trees would have a place to grow.

Narrator: The animals stopped and thought about what Jace said. They looked up at the tall trees and then down at the rich, dark soil.

Tico the Toucan: You are right, Jace. My tall trees need the forest floor to grow strong and reach the sky.

Max the Monkey: And my canopy roof protects Fern and the other animals in the understory from the heavy wind and sun!

Fern the Frog: And the rain that falls on Tico at the top eventually trickles down to give me a bath in the middle.

Sam the Sloth: We all... need... each other... to survive.

Narrator: The animals realized that the rainforest is like one big, giant team. Every layer, from the dark floor to the sunny tops, works together to make a perfect home for everyone.

Jace the Jaguar: We are lucky to live in such a special place. Let us promise to take care of our forest and all the layers in it.

All Roles: (Together) We love our rainforest home!

Narrator: And so, the friends returned to their favorite spots, knowing that every part of the forest—high or low—is exactly where it belongs.
