Georgia O'Keeffe: Painting Big and Bold

Georgia O'Keeffe was a famous artist. She was born on a farm in Wisconsin. Even as a young girl, Georgia loved nature. She liked looking at the shapes of leaves and the colors of dirt. When she was ten years old, she knew she wanted to paint.

When Georgia grew up, she moved to New York City. The city was very busy. People were always in a hurry. Georgia noticed that people walked right past pretty flowers without looking. She wanted them to stop and see the flowers. So, she painted flowers that were giant! She filled her whole canvas with bright red, yellow, and purple petals. People were amazed by her large paintings.

Later, Georgia moved to the desert in New Mexico. She loved the wide blue sky and the red cliffs. Georgia liked to walk outside and look at rocks and sand. She found animal bones on the ground. Other people thought the bones were strange, but Georgia thought they were beautiful. She painted cow skulls with pretty flowers against the bright sky. She also painted the rolling hills with soft orange and pink colors.

Georgia lived to be ninety-eight years old. She loved waking up early to see the sunrise over the mountains. Today, people remember Georgia O'Keeffe for her bold paintings. She taught the world to slow down and look closely at the beauty all around us.
