Henri Matisse: The Artist Who Never Stopped Creating
Henri Matisse was born in a small town in northern France in 1869. Surprisingly, he did not grow up wanting to be a famous artist. As a young man, he actually moved to Paris to study law and worked as a clerk in a legal office. His life changed forever when he was twenty years old. While recovering from an illness, his mother brought him a box of paints to help him pass the time. Matisse later said that the moment he started painting, he felt a sense of freedom he had never known before. He decided to leave his law career behind and dedicate his life to art.
Matisse soon became known for his incredible use of color. In the early 1900s, most artists tried to paint things exactly as they appeared in the real world. Matisse had a different idea. He believed that color should be used to express emotions rather than just to copy nature. He painted faces with green stripes and used bright reds for the floors and walls of his rooms. Critics were so shocked by his wild, vibrant colors that they called him and his fellow artists "Les Fauves," which means "The Wild Beasts." Instead of being insulted, Matisse embraced this energy and continued to create art that felt alive and joyful.
