How to Make a Paper Shadow Puppet

Shadow puppets are fun tools for storytelling. Long ago, performers entertained audiences by holding flat cutouts in front of light to cast dark shapes onto screens. You can bring this classic craft into your own room using basic supplies. Follow these steps to design, assemble, and perform with your very own paper shadow puppet.
Materials You Will Need
- A piece of sturdy drawing paper or cardstock
- A regular pencil
- A pair of child-safe scissors
- Clear tape or masking tape
- A wooden craft stick or a clean plastic drinking straw
- A handheld LED flashlight that stays cool to the touch
- An adult helper
Step 1: Draw Your Puppet Outline
First, think about the character you want to create. Animals with distinct shapes, like a rabbit with tall ears or a bird with spread wings, work very well. Place your paper flat on a table. Using your pencil, sketch the outline of your character. Keep the outside shape simple. Intricate details drawn inside the outline, such as eyes or stripes, will not show up as lines in a solid shadow. Instead, focus on a bold silhouette with recognizable edges.
