Inventing Fun: Inside a Toy Designer's Workshop

Have you ever wondered how a brand-new game gets from a simple thought onto the shelves of a playroom? Today, third-grade student reporter Maya speaks with toy designer Carlos Rivera about the creative process of inventing fun.
Maya: Thank you for talking with our class today, Mr. Rivera! What does a toy designer actually do all day?
Mr. Rivera: Thanks for having me, Maya! My main job is solving puzzles to make people smile. I think up fresh ideas for games and playthings, build early models to see if they work, and then improve them until they are fun, safe, and sturdy.
Maya: Where does a brand-new idea begin? Do you just wait for a lightning bolt of inspiration?
Mr. Rivera: Ideas actually come from everyday life! Sometimes I watch how children play at the park, or I remember games I loved when I was eight years old. For example, my newest project started because I saw a squirrel trying to balance on a thin tree branch. I thought, "Wouldn't it be fun to create a tabletop game about balancing wobbly acorns?"
Maya: That sounds neat! Once you have that thought, what is your very first step?
