Jan Arrives at New Amsterdam

Jan stood at the front of the big wooden ship. The salty wind blew his hair. He had traveled across the wide ocean for many weeks. Now, the blue water was calm and still.
"Look ahead, Jan!" called his mother. Jan looked out across the harbor. He saw land at last. This new place was called New Amsterdam.
Jan saw high green hills and a tall windmill spinning in the breeze. Small wooden houses stood in a neat row by the water. Some houses had bright red roofs that shone in the warm sun. White birds flew over the docks.
The ship bumped gently against the wooden pier. Sailors tied heavy ropes to big wooden posts. Jan held his small carved toy in his pocket. He held his father's warm hand tightly.
Jan walked down the wooden ramp onto the soft ground. His boots made a tap on the dirt path. He heard people talking and saw wagons rolling by. Jan smiled because he was finally at his new home.
