John Chapman: The Man Behind Johnny Appleseed

John Chapman spent much of his life helping apple trees take root in new places. Today, many people know him by another name: Johnny Appleseed. Stories describe him wandering through the wilderness, tossing seeds wherever he went. The real Chapman had a more careful plan. He grew young trees in nurseries and made a living by selling them.
Chapman was born in 1774 in Leominster, Massachusetts. His mother died when he was young, and his father later remarried. As a young man, Chapman traveled west. By the early 1800s, he was working in areas that are now part of Ohio and Pennsylvania. He eventually traveled and planted in Indiana, too.
Chapman gathered apple seeds from cider mills, where apples were crushed to make juice. He planted the seeds in nurseries, which are places where young plants are grown and cared for. Rather than scattering seeds at random, he chose pieces of land where settlers might want trees. He often fenced his nurseries to help protect the seedlings from animals.
