Lena Horne was born on June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a family dedicated to community leadership, she learned early on the importance of dignity and education. As a teenager in the 1930s, she began her professional singing career at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem. Audiences immediately noticed her expressive voice, poise, and magnetic stage presence. Her talent soon opened doors to national touring orchestras, radio broadcasts, and theatrical stages across the country.

In the early 1940s, Horne moved to Hollywood and signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, becoming one of the first African American performers to secure a long-term studio agreement. However, the entertainment industry at the time operated under strict racial segregation. Studios frequently limited Black performers to minor, stereotypical roles. Horne and her family insisted on a contract clause ensuring she would not be relegated to subservient parts. Although she appeared in major musical films such as Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, her scenes were often filmed so they could be easily cut out when the movies were screened in segregated theaters across the South. Despite these frustrating barriers, Horne refused to accept roles that compromised her self-respect.
