Make Your Voice Heard: The Sixth-Grade Audio-Story Workshop

Have you ever listened to an eerie mystery podcast on a rainy afternoon, or giggled at a radio comedy during a long family road trip? Have you ever wondered how creators turn simple written words into a rich world of creaking doors, echoing whispers, and rising orchestral music? If you enjoy writing stories, testing out dramatic character voices, or tinkering with digital technology, your next big creative project starts right here.
Oak Creek Middle School is thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new, after-school Audio-Story Workshop! Designed exclusively for sixth graders, this six-week hands-on program gives you the exact tools, guidance, and studio space needed to transform your original ideas into a fully produced, three-minute narrative podcast episode.
What You Will Create
Writing for the ear is an entirely different adventure than writing for the printed page. In an audio production, your audience cannot see illustrations, facial expressions, or descriptive chapter headings. Everything hinges on dialogue, vocal pacing, ambient background sound, and carefully timed Foley effects—the everyday physical noises creators record using household objects.
- narrative:
- A spoken or written account of connected events; a story.
- ambient:
- Relating to the immediate surroundings or background environment.
- authentic:
- Real, genuine, or true to how something sounds or acts in real life.
- condenser microphones:
- Sensitive recording devices commonly used in studios to capture clear, detailed audio.
- pop filters:
- Noise-protection screens placed before microphones to reduce harsh puffing breath sounds.
- troubleshooting:
- Identifying, analyzing, and solving problems with software, hardware, or processes.
- mastered:
- Completed the final preparation and balancing of an audio recording for distribution.
