OAK VALLEY — On Monday morning, Maple Elementary School opened a brand-new Puzzle Corner inside the school library. The special area was created just for second-grade students to visit during their morning reading time.

Mr. Chen, the school librarian, planned the space during the winter break. He set up two round wooden tables near the tall picture book shelves. A bright blue rug sits on the floor between the tables. On top of the tables, bins hold jigsaw puzzles with large cardboard pieces, wooden shape blocks, and word-matching cards.

At nine o'clock, the first group of second graders walked into the library. Many children smiled when they saw the colorful new rug and the open boxes. Four students sat down together right away to try a fifty-piece puzzle showing a map of the solar system.

"The corner pieces were easy to find," said second grader Leo Martinez. "We looked for the flat edges first. Then we matched the yellow pieces to make the sun."

Across the table, another student named Maya Lin tested a pattern puzzle. She used green triangle blocks to make a big star. Maya shared her blocks with a classmate when he needed one more shape to finish his design.
