Marcus and the Math Mountain

Marcus wasn't afraid of much. Roller coasters? Bring them on! Spiders? He'd carefully escort them outside. But math tests? Those turned his stomach into a tangled knot. He called them "Math Mountains" because they seemed impossible to climb.

This week, Mrs. Davis announced the biggest Math Mountain yet: a test on fractions. Marcus felt that familiar knot tightening. He knew he could study, but the fear of failing often tripped him up. His grandpa, a retired history teacher, noticed Marcus’s worry.

"Marcus," Grandpa said, "I can see that Math Mountain is giving you trouble. Have you ever heard of Stoicism?"

Marcus shook his head. "Is that like...studying really hard?"

"Not exactly," Grandpa chuckled. "It's about focusing on what you can control. You can't control how hard the test is, or what questions Mrs. Davis will ask. But you can control how much you study, how well you prepare, and how you react to the challenge."

Grandpa explained that Stoics believe worrying about things you can't change is like carrying extra weight up a mountain. Instead, focus on the path ahead and the steps you can take.

Marcus decided to try it. He made a study schedule. Instead of panicking when he didn't understand a problem, he asked Mrs. Davis for help during recess. He practiced fractions every day, breaking down the Math Mountain into smaller, manageable hills.

Test day arrived. Marcus took a deep breath, remembering Grandpa’s words. He couldn't control the test, but he could control his effort. He worked through each problem, one step at a time. Some problems were tricky, but he didn't let them defeat him. He kept going.

When Mrs. Davis handed back the tests, Marcus hesitated before looking at his grade. He closed his eyes, remembering to focus on what he could control: the fact that he had studied hard and done his best. He opened his eyes. A big, red "B+" smiled back at him.

Marcus grinned. It wasn't a perfect score, but it was proof that even the tallest Math Mountain could be climbed with the right mindset. He had faced his fear, focused on what he could control, and made it to the top – or at least, pretty close!
