Miles to Go: A Long-Haul Trucker's Diary

October 14 — 5:30 AM — Somewhere in Nebraska
The sun isn't even awake yet, but my truck, Big Blue, is already humming. I just finished my morning pre-trip inspection. I checked the tire pressure, tested the brakes, and made sure the refrigerated trailer is keeping our cargo—thousands of pounds of fresh Michigan apples—at the perfect cool temperature. Our destination is a grocery distribution center in Sacramento, California. That is still over a thousand miles away, but as a long-haul trucker, I measure my life in miles, not hours.
I took a long sip of warm cocoa from my thermos and climbed up into the cab. The driver's seat is like my living room chair; it is where I spend up to eleven hours a day. Turning onto Interstate 80, the highway was almost empty. The headlights carved a bright path through the morning mist. There is a peaceful silence on the road at dawn. It feels like the whole country is sleeping, and it is my job to make sure everything is ready for them when they wake up.
October 14 — 2:15 PM — Crossing into Wyoming
The flat cornfields of Nebraska have officially given way to the rolling hills and wide-open plains of Wyoming. The wind is picking up, pushing hard against the side of the trailer, so I have to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel.
A silver minivan passed me a few miles back. In the back window, a young boy looked out, caught my eye, and vigorously pumped his fist up and down. I couldn't help but smile. It is the universal signal for "honk the horn!" I pulled the overhead air-horn cord, letting out a loud, deep HONK-HONK! The boy grinned and waved excitedly before his family's car zipped ahead. That little interaction always brightens my day.
I pulled into a truck stop an hour ago for a quick lunch and diesel fuel. Truck stops are like mini-towns for drivers. They have giant fuel stations, restaurants, laundry rooms, and even showers. I chatted with another driver named Marcus who was hauling auto parts from Ohio. We swapped stories about the weather conditions up in the mountain passes before hitting the road again. On the highway, you are alone in your cab, but you are always part of a massive, moving community.
October 14 — 8:30 PM — Rest Area near Rock Springs, Wyoming
The sun set about an hour ago, painting the Wyoming sky in brilliant shades of purple and orange. I have officially reached my driving limit for the day, so I have parked Big Blue in a designated truck parking spot at a quiet rest area. Safety is the most important rule on the road, and getting enough sleep is crucial.
I just finished filling out my electronic logbook, which tracks my driving hours to ensure I stay within safe legal limits. Now, I am sitting in the sleeper berth behind my driver’s seat. It is a cozy little space with a bed, a small refrigerator, and some shelves for my books and photos of my family.
Before I turn off the lights, I like to step outside for a minute. The Wyoming sky is so clear that I can see thousands of bright, twinkling stars. Tomorrow, I will climb over the Rocky Mountains and head down into the deserts of Utah and Nevada. But for tonight, the engine is quiet, the apples are cold, and the highway is waiting. Time to get some rest.
