Muhammad Ali: A Life in and Beyond the Ring

A boxer stands in a ring with his gloves raised. Outside the ropes is a microphone, a reminder that Muhammad Ali became known for more than boxing. His skill made him famous, and his public voice carried his beliefs far beyond the ring.
1942: Born in Louisville
Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. His birth name was Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. He grew up during a time when segregation kept Black and white Americans apart in many public places. Black Americans faced unfair treatment under laws and customs that limited their opportunities.
1954: Discovering boxing
When Ali was 12, someone stole his bicycle. He reported the theft to a police officer named Joe Martin, who also trained young boxers. Ali began learning to box with Martin. He trained hard, developing quick movements and learning to control his punches. As an amateur boxer, he competed without being paid and won many matches.
1960: Olympic gold
At age 18, Ali traveled to Rome, Italy, for the Summer Olympics. He won a gold medal in the light heavyweight boxing division, a group for boxers within a certain weight range. After returning home, he became a professional boxer. That meant boxing was now his career, and he could be paid to compete.
