Pakal the Great: The Architect King of Palenque
Long ago, in the dense green jungles of what is now southern Mexico, a powerful ruler transformed a small city into a magnificent kingdom of stone. This ruler was K’inich Janaab’ Pakal I, better known today as Pakal the Great. He was born in the year 603 CE and became the king of the Maya city-state of Palenque when he was only twelve years old. Because he was so young, his mother, Lady Sak K’uk’, served as the regent. This means she helped him rule and make decisions until he was old enough to lead on his own. Together, they worked to rebuild a city that had been badly damaged by wars with neighboring kingdoms.
Pakal’s reign lasted for sixty-eight years, which is one of the longest in world history. During this time, he focused on building incredible structures that would tell the story of his family and his right to rule. Before Pakal, many Maya buildings were simple, but he introduced a new style of architecture. He used thin walls and wide, sloping roofs that allowed for larger rooms and more decorative space. His builders used stucco, a type of plaster made from limestone, to create life-sized portraits and scenes of history on the walls of the city.
