To the Members of the Illinois Historic Preservation Commission:
Dear Commission Members,
I am writing to you today as a dedicated student and history enthusiast to advocate for the urgent preservation of historic Route 66 landmarks across the state of Illinois. Stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, Route 66—famously dubbed the "Main Street of America"—holds an irreplaceable position in our national heritage. However, many of the iconic neon signs, vintage gas stations, and classic roadside diners that once welcomed millions of travelers through Illinois are now deteriorating due to neglect, lack of funding, and modern development pressures. If immediate action is not taken to safeguard these structures, our state risks losing a vital cultural legacy and a powerful engine for local tourism.
