Preserving the Portal to the Stars: A Letter to the Flagstaff City Council
Dear Members of the Flagstaff City Council,
As a middle school student and an aspiring astronomer, I am writing to urge you to strongly protect and enforce Flagstaff’s historic dark sky ordinances. Our city has a proud legacy as a pioneer in dark sky preservation, dating back to 1958 when we passed the world's first outdoor lighting regulations. In 2001, Flagstaff was rightfully designated as the world's very first International Dark Sky City. However, as our population grows and commercial development expands, the pristine darkness of our nocturnal sky faces unprecedented threats from light pollution. We must act decisively to preserve this invaluable resource for scientific research, education, and our community's unique identity.
