Princess Senhime and the White Heron Castle
Princess Senhime was born in 1597, during a time of great change in Japan. She was the eldest daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada and the granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the powerful military leader who became the first shogun of the Edo Period. As a princess of the ruling family, Senhime's life was deeply shaped by politics. In those days, powerful families often arranged marriages to create alliances, which were peaceful agreements between different clans.
When Senhime was only seven years old, she was sent to live at Osaka Castle to marry Toyotomi Hideyori. This marriage was meant to bring peace between two of the most powerful families in Japan. For many years, Senhime lived a quiet life inside the massive stone walls of Osaka Castle. However, peace did not last. In 1615, a great conflict broke out, and the castle came under a fierce siege, meaning it was surrounded by enemy soldiers. During the battle, the castle caught fire. Just before the castle fell, Senhime was rescued from the flames by a brave warrior and returned safely to her family.
