Room 2B Solves the Lost-and-Found Mystery

OAK CREEK ELEMENTARY — On Friday morning, the students in Room 2B solved a big problem in the hallway. They set up a special lost-and-found display in the school cafeteria. By lunchtime, dozens of missing items were back in their owners' hands.
All winter, the school lost-and-found bin had been overflowing. Jackets, water bottles, and gloves sat in a messy pile. Nobody could find anything in the deep wooden box. Second-grade teacher Mr. Diaz and his students decided to take action.
First, the class gathered all the items from the box on Thursday afternoon. Next, they sorted everything into neat groups on long tables. They placed blue tape labels on the tables for coats, hats, lunchboxes, and shoes. They even hung up coats on hangers so people could see the colors.
At 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the display opened. Classes walked past the tables on their way to the library. Many children smiled as they spotted items they had missed for weeks.
"I found my lucky green mitten!" said first grader Maya Lin. "I thought it was gone forever."
By 1:00 p.m., the students had returned forty-two items to happy classmates. Mr. Diaz said the project was a great success. The class plans to host another display at the end of spring.
