PINE CREEK — On Friday morning, the students in Room 4 finished making a new reading corner. They worked with their teacher and the school custodian to build the space. The class did not buy anything new. Instead, they used items that the school already had.

The project began on Monday. The class wanted a quiet spot for independent reading. Mr. Hall, the custodian, checked the supply room down the hall. He found a clean blue rug that was rolled up in a corner. He also found two small wooden shelves that another room did not need.

Next, the students helped collect comfortable items to sit on. Three families sent in clean floor cushions that were no longer used at home. Two students carried plastic bins from the art closet to hold paperbacks. The children placed the books inside with the covers facing forward. Then, they set the bins on the lowest shelf so every student could reach them.

People in the room have different opinions about the new space. Second grader Mia likes how neat the corner looks. "The plastic bins make it very easy to find a book and clean up quickly," she said.
