Rooted in Iowa: Why Prairie Restoration Belongs in the Classroom
When European settlers first arrived in Iowa during the nineteenth century, they encountered a vast ocean of green: millions of acres of tallgrass prairie stretching as far as the eye could see. Today, however, less than one-tenth of one percent of Iowa’s original prairie remains, replaced almost entirely by intensive agriculture and urban development. While farming is essential to the state's economy, this drastic landscape transformation has left generations of young Iowans disconnected from their native ecosystem. To heal both the land and our educational system, Iowa middle schools should implement mandatory outdoor education classes focused on local prairie restoration. Integrating hands-on prairie management into the standard curriculum would enrich scientific understanding, foster civic responsibility, and strengthen students' connection to their local environment.
