Why Iowa Schools Need Prairie Restoration Classes
When settlers first came to Iowa in the 1800s, they found a huge ocean of grass. Millions of acres of tallgrass prairie stretched across the state. Today, less than one percent of Iowa’s original prairie is left. Most of the land was turned into farms and towns. Farming is very important, but this big change means young people rarely see Iowa's natural landscape. To help both the land and students, Iowa schools should require outdoor classes where students help with prairie restoration. Learning outdoors would improve science skills, teach responsibility, and connect kids to nature.
First, working outdoors helps students learn science by doing real activities. Science books explain how plants grow, but sitting at a desk is not the same as working in a field. When students go outside, they can remove an invasive species or plant deep-rooted grasses like Big Bluestem. They can also see how native pollinators like bees need specific wildflowers. Kids can watch how long prairie roots hold soil in place to stop erosion. Seeing these ideas in person helps students understand science much better than just studying for a test.
