Simple Life in Holmes County: The Amish Community

Nested in rolling green hills in northeastern Ohio lies Holmes County, home to one of the largest Amish communities in the world. Visitors traveling through this countryside often feel as though they have stepped back in time. Instead of cars speeding down the roads, black horse-drawn buggies clip-clop gently along the shoulders. Instead of bright neon signs and bustling shopping malls, wide open fields and neatly kept farmhouses dot the landscape. The Amish people have chosen a unique way of life centered around simplicity, family, and hard work.

The Amish lifestyle is guided by strong traditions that encourage living simply and remaining separate from many aspects of modern technology. Most Amish homes do not connect to the public electrical grid. Instead of using modern electric lights, televisions, or smartphones, families rely on oil lamps, propane stoves, and battery-powered lanterns. They wear plain clothing, usually made in solid, muted colors like navy blue, black, or dark green. Men wear simple trousers and broad-brimmed hats, while women wear long dresses, aprons, and cloth head coverings. At home, many Amish speak a dialect of German often called "Pennsylvania Dutch," reserving English for interactions with visitors and local business.
