Have you ever seen snow falling down? Snow is made of many tiny bits of ice called snowflakes. Snowflakes are very small. They float in the air. Winter is the time when we see snow.
How Snowflakes Form
Snowflakes start high up in the clouds. The clouds are very cold. Water in the clouds freezes. It turns into ice crystals. These crystals join together. As they fall, they get bigger. They make the beautiful shapes we see. No two snowflakes are the same!
Shapes of Snowflakes
Most snowflakes have six sides. But they all look a little different. Some look like stars. Some look like needles. Some are fluffy. The shape depends on how cold it is. It also depends on how much water is in the cloud.
Snow and Ice
Sometimes, snow turns into ice. Ice is frozen water. When snow melts a little, it can freeze again. This makes ice. Ice can be slippery. Be careful when you walk on ice!
Why We Love Snow
Snow is fun to play in. We can make snowballs. We can build snowmen. We can go sledding! Snow makes the world look white and bright. Snow is a special part of winter.
