The Beacon of the Prairie: Preserving Chimney Rock
NARRATOR: Welcome to Western Nebraska, where a towering spire of rock rises dramatically above the North Platte River valley. This is Chimney Rock, one of the most famous landmarks on the Oregon Trail.
PIONEER SARAH: (Looking into the distance, shielding her eyes) Look over there! Is that the giant rock father told us about? It looks like a giant finger pointing straight toward the sky!
NARRATOR: In the 1840s and 1850s, thousands of pioneers traveled west in covered wagons. Seeing Chimney Rock meant they were making steady progress on their long, exhausting journey.
PIONEER SARAH: (Writing in a small diary) Day 42. We finally reached Chimney Rock today. Seeing it gives our family hope that we can cross the mountains before winter arrives.
RANGER TAYLOR: Pioneers wrote about Chimney Rock in their diaries more than any other landmark on the entire trail. But as decades passed, fierce winds, heavy rains, and lightning strikes began to erode the fragile clay and sandstone spire.
CONSERVATIONIST MR. AVERY: (Holding a map, looking concerned) By the early 1900s, local citizens realized this magnificent natural monument was slowly shrinking. If we didn't protect the land surrounding it, future generations would lose a vital piece of American history.
