High above the shrouded valley of Zephyr’s Edge, the floating islands hummed with the quiet energy of the night. Ten-year-old Leo sat on the wooden dock, dangling his legs over the endless sea of clouds. In his lap lay his grandfather’s brass telescope. Leo was searching the starry horizon for the most elusive creatures in the sky: the Air Holdens.

According to the old legends, the Air Holdens were gigantic, glowing beasts, shaped like a cross between a whale and a majestic bird. They did not just fly through the wind; they created it. Their massive, feathered wings beat in slow, powerful rhythms that kept the floating islands aloft. For generations, sailors had claimed that seeing an Air Holden brought good fortune and fair winds, but there had not been a sighting in over fifty years. Most people in the village thought they were just fairy tales.

But Leo believed. He adjusted the lens of his telescope, sweeping the sky past the Whispering Peaks. Suddenly, the clouds below began to swirl. A soft, sapphire-blue light pulsed from the depths of the mist. Leo held his breath, pressing his eye tightly against the cold brass.

Out of the vapor rose a creature of unbelievable scale. Its body shimmered with celestial light, and its long, sweeping tail left a trail of stardust in the cool night air. The Air Holden glided silently, its deep-blue eyes meeting Leo’s gaze for a single, breathtaking second. With one slow sweep of its iridescent wings, a warm, gentle breeze swept across the dock, rustling Leo’s hair.

As quickly as it appeared, the great beast dove back into the sea of clouds, leaving the night quiet once more. Leo lowered his telescope, a wide grin spreading across his face. The legends were real, and the wind was just beginning to rise.
