The Gearbox Challenge

Mateo always preferred to work alone. In his mind, group projects only meant waiting for other people to catch up or fixing their mistakes. When Ms. Albright announced the annual fifth-grade bridge-building competition, Mateo immediately grabbed the cardboard base and claimed the glue gun. His assigned partner, Priya, opened the box of wooden craft sticks and plastic gears with quiet curiosity.
"We need to build a drawbridge with working gears," Priya suggested, pointing to a diagram in the instruction booklet. "If we divide the tasks, you can construct the roadway while I assemble the gear crank."
Mateo waved her idea away. "I’ve got a better design," he said briskly. "Just hand me the wooden sticks, and I'll assemble the whole frame myself. It will be much faster that way."
For the next thirty minutes, Mateo glued sticks furiously. Priya offered suggestions about reinforcing the center span, but Mateo barely listened. However, when he tried to test the lifting mechanism, disaster struck. The bridge tilted awkwardly to one side, and the heavy crossbeams snapped with a loud crunch under the strain. Mateo stared at the splintered wood, his cheeks burning with frustration. There were only twenty minutes left before judging, and his solo plan had completely failed.
