The Gnome Guard
Deep in the heart of Mrs. Gable's garden, nestled amongst the petunias and plump tomatoes, lived a family of garden gnomes. There was Papa Grumble, Mama Lilypad, and their two children, Pip and Squeak.
The gnomes were tasked with a very important job: protecting the garden. They scared away snails, chased off slugs, and kept a watchful eye on the ripening berries. They puffed out their chests and felt very important.
One sunny morning, Papa Grumble spotted a twitching nose at the edge of the garden. It was Barnaby, the hungriest rabbit in the county. Barnaby's eyes gleamed as he surveyed the rows of juicy carrots and leafy lettuce.
"Lilypad!" Papa Grumble whispered, his voice trembling beneath his bushy beard. "It's Barnaby! He's back!"
Mama Lilypad peeked over a sunflower. "Oh dear," she said. "He looks even hungrier than last time."
Pip and Squeak exchanged worried glances. They knew Barnaby's reputation. He could devour a whole cabbage patch in a single afternoon.
"We need a plan," Pip declared, his little gnome hat askew. "We can't let him destroy Mrs. Gable's garden!"
Squeak nodded, her eyes bright with determination. "Let's use the watering can!"
The gnomes huddled together, whispering their plan. Papa Grumble would distract Barnaby with a series of loud coughs. Mama Lilypad would sneak around the back with the watering can. Pip and Squeak would be ready to create a diversion if needed.
Papa Grumble cleared his throat. "Ahem! AHEM!" he boomed, puffing out his chest. Barnaby twitched his nose, his attention caught. He hopped closer to the sound, curious.
Mama Lilypad crept around the back of the carrot patch, the watering can wobbling in her tiny hands. She took a deep breath and aimed the nozzle at Barnaby.
"NOW!" she shouted. A stream of water shot out, drenching Barnaby from head to toe.
Barnaby yelped, surprised and soaked. He shook his fur, sending droplets of water flying in all directions. He glared at the gnomes, his hunger temporarily forgotten.
Pip and Squeak jumped out from behind a tomato plant, waving their arms and yelling, "Go away, Barnaby! This is our garden!"
Barnaby, overwhelmed by the gnomes' combined efforts, decided that perhaps Mrs. Gable's garden wasn't worth the trouble. He hopped away, muttering about finding a drier, less defended patch of clover.
The gnome family cheered, their hearts swelling with pride. They had saved the garden once again. Mrs. Gable's vegetables were safe, at least for today.
As the sun began to set, Papa Grumble patted Pip and Squeak on their heads. "You were very brave," he said. "A garden is only as safe as its guards."
Mama Lilypad smiled. "Now, let's have some tea," she said. "We've earned it."
