Narrator: It was a bright, cloudless Tuesday morning at Oak Creek Elementary. The fourth-grade science class gathered around picnic tables behind the cafeteria, squinting into the warm sunshine.
Mr. Clark: Welcome to the annual Solar Oven Challenge! Today, your mission is to use only the power of sunlight to melt a marshmallow inside your homemade ovens. Remember what we learned about thermal energy, reflection, and absorption.
Maya: (waving a roll of aluminum foil) Team Bright Sparks is ready! Jordan and I covered the entire inside of our cardboard box with shiny foil. It looks like a spaceship!
Jordan: Exactly. The shiny surface will reflect the sun's rays right toward the center of the box. That should create maximum heat, right Mr. Clark?
Mr. Clark: (smiling) Reflection is a powerful tool, Jordan. But what happens to the heat once it enters the box?
Alex: (peeking over from the next table) That is where our design takes the lead! Priya and I taped clear plastic wrap tightly across the top opening of our shoebox.
