The Kind Gardener and the Magic Ash
Long, long ago, in a peaceful village nestled between rolling hills and a winding river, lived an old gardener named Mr. Tanaka and his wife, Mrs. Tanaka. They were known throughout the village for their gentle hearts and their love for all living things. Their dearest companion was a small, fluffy white dog named Shiro, who was more like a child to them.
One sunny morning, as Mr. Tanaka was tending to his beautiful flower garden, Shiro began to dig frantically near an old cherry tree. "What is it, Shiro?" Mr. Tanaka chuckled, watching his excited dog. Shiro barked and dug faster, his tail wagging furiously. Curious, Mr. Tanaka joined him, and soon, they uncovered a small, gleaming gold coin. They dug a little more and found a whole pot filled with gold coins! The Tanakas were overjoyed, not because they were rich, but because now they could help others in their village.
Their neighbor, a grumpy and greedy man named Mr. Goro, watched everything from his window with envy. He saw the Tanakas sharing their wealth, helping repair the village bridge and buying warm clothes for children. Mr. Goro wanted gold too, but he didn't have a kind heart or a dog like Shiro.
One day, Mr. Goro decided to borrow Shiro, thinking the dog would lead him to treasure too. He took Shiro to his own yard and forced the dog to dig. But Shiro found nothing. Mr. Goro grew angry and chased Shiro away. Shiro quickly ran back to the Tanakas, safe and sound.
A few days later, a strong wind blew through the village, and many trees lost their leaves. Shiro, sniffing around the garden, began to bark excitedly at a withered old cherry tree. "What now, Shiro?" asked Mr. Tanaka. Shiro jumped up and down, pointing his nose at the tree. Mr. Tanaka noticed something strange. The tree, usually bare in autumn, had one branch with a single, dry cherry blossom. He rubbed the blossom, and a magical sweet scent filled the air.
Mr. Tanaka gathered some of the dry blossoms and, remembering an old legend, sprinkled them over a barren tree. Instantly, bright pink cherry blossoms burst forth, filling the tree with color and life! The villagers cheered, calling it a miracle. The news reached the local lord, who invited Mr. Tanaka to show his magic. Mr. Tanaka sprinkled the ashes on the lord's favorite withered tree, and it bloomed beautifully. The lord rewarded Mr. Tanaka with many gifts.
When Mr. Goro heard about this, he was furious. He secretly stole some of the magical ash from Mr. Tanaka's house. He rushed to the lord's palace, boasting that he could make trees bloom even better. But when Mr. Goro threw the ash, it blew into the lord's eyes, making him cough and sneeze. The lord, angry and uncomfortable, punished Mr. Goro for his trickery.
Mr. Tanaka and Mrs. Tanaka continued to live happily, always sharing their good fortune and kindness with everyone. Shiro stayed by their side, a loyal and loving companion, proving that a pure heart and a true friend are the greatest treasures of all.
