The Kitten in Classroom 3B

It all started on a warm Monday morning. It was the first day back after summer break, and I was excited to begin fifth grade at Crestwood School. My name is Leo Maxwell, and I had big plans for the year. I wanted to get good grades, make new friends, and impress Sarah Jenkins, the most popular girl in class.

However, my plans changed the second I walked into Room 3B for English class. Sitting on top of the teacher's desk, right next to a neat stack of papers, was a kitten. It was not a drawing or a toy. It was a real, live, fluffy kitten.

The kitten had soft fur the color of caramel and bright, warm eyes. She looked completely calm as twenty students stared at her in surprise.

Our teacher, Mrs. Crabtree, was usually very strict and serious. But today, she was smiling brightly. "Class, meet Mittens," she said proudly. "Mittens will be staying with us for a while."

Hand after hand shot into the air. Everyone wanted to know where the kitten came from. Mrs. Crabtree explained that Mittens was abandoned near the school. The local animal shelter had no extra room, so Mrs. Crabtree agreed to foster her as our classroom mascot.

That marked the start of the most exciting semester ever. Mittens became an instant celebrity. Classmates who usually argued were suddenly working together just to hold her. Sarah Jenkins spent nearly every recess gently scratching Mittens behind the ears.

Of course, keeping a pet in school caused some funny troubles. Mittens once tore up a pile of practice worksheets, thinking they were toys. Another time, she jumped right onto the head of the math teacher, Mr. Henderson, when he stopped by to borrow a stapler!

Yet, having Mittens around taught us valuable lessons. We learned about responsibility by taking turns feeding her, filling her water dish, and keeping her area tidy. We learned patience when she decided to take a nap across our open notebooks.

Best of all, Mittens brought our whole class closer together. I even got to know Sarah Jenkins better while cleaning up after the kitten. I realized she was kind, funny, and loved animals just like I did. When a loving family finally adopted Mittens at the end of the semester, we were sad to say goodbye, but grateful for the unexpected friendship she gave us.
