Rather than emerging from a corporate design studio, Bernie was inspired by a real-life superfan named Milt Mason, who demonstrated his unwavering loyalty to his hometown team by quite literally taking up residence high above the outfield.

In 1970, Major League Baseball returned to Wisconsin after a painful five-year absence following the relocation of the Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta. The newly formed Milwaukee Brewers had just arrived from Seattle right before opening day. Despite the city's excitement about having a team again, attendance numbers during that inaugural season lagged. The organization needed a creative spark of enthusiasm to rally the community and fill the cavernous bleachers of County Stadium.

Enter 69-year-old Milton Mason, a retired accountant and devoted baseball enthusiast. Mason pitched an audacious, headline-grabbing public relations stunt to the team's leadership: he would climb atop the towering center-field scoreboard and live in a modest, makeshift trailer perched precarious dozens of feet in the air. Furthermore, he vowed not to set foot on solid ground until at least 40,000 fans attended a single home game. On June 22, 1970, equipped with basic provisions, a telephone, and an unshakeable sense of civic pride, Mason ascended to his high-altitude perch.

For nearly forty days, Mason lived among the stadium lights and roosting birds. He weathered intense summer heatwaves, thunderstorm winds, and cramped living quarters while regularly greeting the crowd below over the public address system. Local residents and sports journalists became captivated by his persistent vigil. Fans sent up warm meals, letters, and well-wishes using a bucket and pulley system. Mason quickly transformed into a local folk hero, steadily drawing curious spectators to the ballpark to witness the daring "man on the scoreboard."

The climax of Mason's endurance test arrived on August 16, 1970, during a game against the Cleveland Indians. A raucous crowd of 44,387 fans packed into the stadium, easily eclipsing the 40,000-seat goal. Fulfilling his promise, Mason prepared to descend from his lofty outpost. Rather than using an ordinary ladder or maintenance elevator, he opted for a dramatic, theatrical exit. Fastening a harness to a zip-line rope, the nearly 70-year-old fan slid all the way down to home plate, where he was greeted with thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the jubilant crowd.

Mason's memorable stunt forever changed the culture of the franchise. In 1973, the organization introduced a brand-new mascot in his honor: Bernie Brewer, depicted as a cheerful, mustachioed man sporting traditional lederhosen. To commemorate Mason's historic perch, the stadium built a miniature Alpine chalet high above the outfield bleachers. Following every home run, Bernie would celebrate by plunging down a towering slide connected to the chalet. Although Milt Mason passed away later in 1973, his legendary summer stay created a lasting ballpark tradition, demonstrating how one passionate fan's creativity could shape sports history for generations.
