To revolutionize the snack industry, the company turned to Dr. Fredric Baur, an organic chemist and food storage specialist. Baur approached the assignment not merely as a culinary challenge, but as a complex structural engineering puzzle. He quickly recognized that using natural potato slices would never yield consistent results because potatoes vary in size, moisture content, and shape. Instead, Baur developed an entirely new approach: he created a moldable dough using ground dehydrated potato flakes, cornstarch, water, and seasonings. This uniform dough could be rolled out into thin sheets and stamped into perfectly identical shapes, laying the groundwork for a completely re-engineered snack.
The true scientific triumph of Baur's invention was the specific geometry he selected for the chip. He chose a distinct mathematical shape known as a hyperbolic paraboloid, which looks similar to a smooth, double-curved saddle. This specific shape was a masterclass in physical engineering. Because a hyperbolic paraboloid curves in two directions at once, it possesses no single flat plane or linear weak point where a crack can easily start. When pressure or impact occurs, the force distributes evenly across the entire surface of the chip. This unique structural stability allowed the chips to be stacked atop one another in tall, neat columns without the bottom chips crumbling under the weight.
To complement his engineered chips, Baur designed a revolutionary packaging system: a rigid, airtight cylindrical canister constructed from cardboard lined with aluminum foil and capped with a removable plastic lid. Unlike traditional flexible bags that offered no physical defense, Baur's sturdy tube acted as an armor shell, protecting the contents from being crushed during transit and storage. Furthermore, by packing the chips tightly in a vertical column, very little air remained inside the container, keeping the chips fresh for unprecedented lengths of time. Although another Procter & Gamble researcher named Alexander Liepa later perfected the flavor and industrial preparation process, Baur’s physical design was the essential bedrock of the brand that officially launched in 1968 under the name Pringles.
Baur was immensely proud of his structural design and considered the tubular container to be the crowning achievement of his career. His devotion to his creation culminated in one of the most unusual final requests in modern history. Before his death in 2008 at the age of 89, Baur instructed his family that he wished to be buried in his most famous creation. Honoring his extraordinary request, his children stopped at a supermarket on their way to the mortuary to purchase a classic Original flavor tube. They placed a portion of his cremated ashes inside the container and buried it alongside his main urn. Today, every time consumers pop open a tube of stackable chips, they are enjoying a product born from a unique blend of organic chemistry, geometric architecture, and undeniable passion.
