The Mighty Nile: The River That Built Egypt
If you look at a map of the world, most major rivers seem to flow downward toward the south. However, the mighty Nile River does something unusual. It flows from the south northward, traveling thousands of miles through the hot, dry Sahara Desert before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. This unique northward journey created one of the greatest and most enduring civilizations in human history: Ancient Egypt.
To understand how the Nile shaped Egypt, we must first look at its geography. The Nile is the longest river in the world. It begins in the rainy highlands of East Africa and winds its way north. Because of this direction of flow, the ancient Egyptians called the southern part of their country "Upper Egypt" because it was upstream, and the northern part "Lower Egypt" because it was downstream near the sea. This can be confusing to look at on modern maps, but to the Egyptians, the river’s flow determined their entire world.

- The yearly flooding of land, which in ancient Egypt brought water and rich soil to the dry fields.
- Silt:
- A fine, nutrient-rich layer of dark mud left behind on riverbanks after a flood, acting as a natural fertilizer.
