Leo was a young lion cub with a very golden mane. He lived in the Great Jungle. Leo loved to explore new places every day. He was very fast and very brave. His best friend was a clever monkey named Maya. Maya had long arms and a very long tail. She liked to swing from the tall green trees. Today was a very special day for the two friends. They wanted to find the Sparkling Pond. It was a place where the water looked like diamonds.
Before they started their trip, they went to see Elder Elephant. Elder Elephant was the oldest animal in the Great Jungle. He was very wise and very kind. He sat near a big grey rock. "Hello, little ones," Elder Elephant said in a deep voice. "The Sparkling Pond is a beautiful place. But the path to get there is very long. You must follow the jungle rules to stay safe. Rules are very important for everyone."
Leo shifted his paws. He was in a hurry to start. "We know the rules, Elder Elephant," Leo said with a smile. Maya nodded her head. "We will be very careful," she promised. Elder Elephant looked at them with his kind eyes. "The first rule is to stay on the Stone Path. Do not leave the path for any reason. The second rule is to listen to the birds. If the birds are quiet, you must stop. The third rule is to help each other. If you follow these rules, you will have a great day."
Leo and Maya said goodbye and started walking. The Stone Path was made of smooth, flat rocks. It wound through the tall grass and under the big trees. The sun was shining through the leaves. It made pretty patterns on the ground. Leo felt very happy. He started to run a little bit faster. "Wait for me!" Maya called out. She was swinging on the branches above the path. They were having a lot of fun.
After a while, Leo saw something bright in the bushes. It was a pink flower. It was the brightest flower Leo had ever seen. The flower was not on the Stone Path. It was far away in the thick grass. Leo wanted to pick it. "Look at that flower, Maya!" Leo cried out. He started to turn away from the path. "Stop!" Maya shouted. "Remember the first rule from Elder Elephant. We must stay on the Stone Path. The grass could be deep. We might get lost."
Leo stopped and looked at the pink flower. It was very pretty. But he looked back at the gray stones. He knew Maya was right. Elder Elephant was wise for a reason. "You are right, Maya," Leo said. "I will stay on the path. The rule is there to keep us from getting lost." They kept walking on the stones. They saw many more flowers, but they stayed on the safe path. Leo felt good because he listened to his friend.
Soon, they came to a part of the jungle that was very dark. The trees grew very close together. The birds were singing loudly in the sky. They heard the chirps and whistles of many friends. Suddenly, all the birds went quiet. Not one bird made a sound. The jungle became very still and very silent. Maya stopped moving. She sat very still on a branch. Leo wanted to keep going. He was only a few steps away from a big hill.
"Maya, why did you stop?" Leo asked. He spoke in a loud voice. "Shhh," Maya whispered. "Remember the second rule. The birds have stopped singing. That means we must stop too. Something is not right." Leo felt his heart beat fast. He stood very still on the Stone Path. He did not move a muscle. He listened very closely. He heard a low growl. It was a big storm coming. A loud wind blew through the trees. A large branch fell right in front of them.
If Leo had kept walking, the branch would have hit him. He looked at the big branch on the path. He felt a little bit scared, but he was safe. "The rule saved me again," Leo said softly. Maya hopped down and patted his shoulder. "That is why we listen," she said. They waited for the wind to stop. They waited for the birds to start singing again. When the jungle was noisy once more, they knew it was safe to move. They were learning that rules were very helpful.
Finally, they reached the Sparkling Pond. The water was blue and very clear. It really did look like it was full of diamonds. Leo and Maya were very tired but very happy. They sat by the water and had a snack. "We followed the rules," Leo said. "We stayed on the path. We listened to the birds. And we helped each other." Maya smiled and dipped her feet in the cool water. "Rules are like a map for our safety," she said.
When the sun began to set, they walked back home. They stayed on the Stone Path the whole way. They listened to the evening birds. They made sure to stay together. When they saw Elder Elephant, they told him all about their trip. "You did a wonderful job," Elder Elephant said. "You followed the rules and stayed safe. Now you are wise explorers." Leo and Maya went to sleep that night feeling very proud. They knew that listening was the best way to have a grand adventure.
