The Story of Juneau, Alaska

Before Juneau: Tlingit Land

Long before anyone called it Juneau, the area was home to the Tlingit people. For thousands of years, they lived off the land and sea. They fished for salmon, hunted animals, and built strong, wooden houses. The Tlingit knew this land well, and they respected its power. They called the area Dzantik'i Heeni, which means "base of the flounder's river."

Gold! Gold Everywhere!

In the late 1800s, things changed. A man named Richard Harris, along with Tlingit guides, found gold in a stream. The word spread like wildfire! Soon, miners came from all over to try their luck. They built camps and started digging for gold. This was the start of the town that would become Juneau.

A New Town is Born

The miners first called their town Harrisburg, after Richard Harris. But later, they changed the name to Juneau, in honor of another gold prospector named Joe Juneau. The town grew quickly. People built houses, stores, and even a school. Juneau became a busy place, full of excitement and dreams of striking it rich.

Juneau Becomes the Capital

As Juneau grew, it became an important city in Alaska. In 1906, it became the capital of Alaska, replacing Sitka. This was a big deal! It meant that Juneau was now the center of government for the whole territory. Big, important decisions about Alaska were made right there in Juneau.

Juneau Today

Today, Juneau is a mix of old and new. You can still see the old buildings from the gold rush days. But you'll also find modern shops, museums, and government buildings.
