This system is called citizen science, and it connects millions of data points across North America.
Interviewer: Are scientists using newer technologies to track them as well?
Dr. Gomez: Yes, modern technology is giving us incredible new tools. Scientists now use special laboratories to analyze the chemical elements, known as stable isotopes, in a monarch's wings. The water a caterpillar drinks while growing up leaves a chemical signature in its adult wings. By testing a fallen wing, we can tell almost exactly where that butterfly began its life, even if it was never tagged!

Dr. Gomez: We are getting very close! Engineers have developed micro-transmitters that weigh less than a drop of water. Researchers can attach these to larger insects to track their exact flight path using automated radio towers. However, because monarchs are so light, we must be extremely careful that any added weight does not disrupt their natural flight.
Interviewer: What happens when the monarchs finally arrive in central Mexico?
Dr. Gomez: They cluster tightly together by the thousands on the branches of oyamel fir trees high in the mountains. Clustering helps them stay warm and protect each other from rain and wind. They rest through the cold winter months until spring arrives. Then, they begin the journey back north to lay eggs and start the cycle all over again.

Dr. Gomez: Tracking helps us identify the exact resting stops and milkweed habitats butterflies need to survive.
