Genetics also affect skin chemistry by shaping the skin microbiome, a community of millions of tiny bacteria living on the skin. These bacteria break down sweat into specific smells that mosquitoes find hard to resist.
In addition to scents, visual contrast and body heat influence which host a mosquito selects. Mosquitoes have compound eyes that are sensitive to movement and dark shapes. Wearing dark clothing, such as black or navy blue, creates a sharp contrast against the background, making a person easy to spot. Heat sensors near the mosquito's mouthparts also help it find warm blood vessels near the surface of the skin. Physical activity and high body heat increase sweating, signaling a prime target.
Because mosquito bites are so annoying, many folk remedies have circulated for generations. Popular myths claim that eating garlic, taking vitamin B1, or eating onions will produce smells that repel mosquitoes. Others believe sweet foods attract them. However, scientific research has repeatedly disproved these claims. Controlled laboratory studies showed no change in bite frequency after people ate garlic or vitamins. Human diet rarely changes skin secretions enough to override natural scent profiles. The one exception is alcohol consumption; drinking beer slightly increases mosquito attraction by raising body heat and altering sweat.
Since eating garlic will not create an invisible shield, effective protection relies on proven methods. The best defense is using repellents with active ingredients like DEET or Picaridin, which jam mosquito receptors so they cannot detect human scent. Wearing light-colored, loose clothing creates a physical barrier while reducing visual contrast. Finally, removing standing water around homes eliminates the breeding grounds for mosquito larvae. Understanding the science behind mosquito attraction helps us separate folklore from reality and enjoy the outdoors.
