Deep beneath the ground, Earth holds thousands of different minerals. You might already know about common minerals like quartz, copper, or salt. However, scientists and engineers often talk about a special group known as "critical minerals." What makes a mineral critical, and why do they matter so much to our everyday lives?

A mineral earns the title "critical" when it meets two main conditions. First, it must be essential to modern technology, national security, or the economy. This means that without it, vital machines, medical devices, or energy systems cannot work properly. Second, its supply chain must be at risk. A supply chain is the process of mining, refining, and transporting a material to where it is needed. If a mineral is rare, difficult to extract, or controlled by only one or two countries, any disruption can cause a major shortage. When a mineral is both extremely necessary and difficult to get, it is labeled critical.

Many critical minerals power the modern devices we use every day. For instance, lithium is a soft, silvery metal used to create lightweight, rechargeable batteries for smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. Another group, known as rare earth elements, includes minerals like neodymium. Neodymium is used to build super-strong magnets found inside electric car motors, hospital scanners, and giant wind turbines that generate clean electricity. If our supply of these minerals suddenly stopped, factories could not build these essential tools.

Because these resources are so valuable, people are finding creative ways to secure them. Geologists are exploring new areas to find untapped deposits, while scientists are inventing cleaner ways to extract minerals from rock. At the same time, engineers are improving recycling methods to recover valuable minerals from discarded computers and phones. By discovering new sources and recycling what we already have, we can make sure the world does not run out of the building blocks of modern life.
