Why Board Games Make Rainy Days Better

When dark clouds roll in and rain taps against the classroom windows, recess changes instantly. Instead of running on the blacktop or swinging on the monkey bars, everyone must stay inside. Some students sigh because being stuck indoors feels boring. However, indoor recess does not have to be dull. In my opinion, having a wide choice of board games is the very best way to spend a rainy recess.
First, board games give students a fun way to play together without needing a giant playground. Outside, children often play tag or four square in big groups. Inside, board games create that same energetic connection around a small table. For example, when my classmates and I play a matching card game or set up a tumbling block tower, we laugh, take turns, and cheer for each other. Rolling dice, moving tokens across a colorful path, or solving a mystery on a gameboard keeps our minds active. Time passes quickly when you are focused on making your next clever move.
